Kristi Webb

Kristi Webb, store sales lead at Sur La Table, is pursuing an MBA from University of Phoenix.

Bringing kids to the table for healthier lives

Kristi Webb believes that helping kids get healthier means getting them to the dinner table. After all, children who eat meals with their families are generally healthier and they perform better in school.

As a store sales lead with Sur La Table in Roseville, Calif., Kristi also believes that she and her company are uniquely positioned to be part of this growing movement. “My company has the technology, resources and consumer reach to get more kids in the kitchen,” she says. “The issue is, there is no brand story yet for the kid-friendly products we carry.”

With an MBA, thanks to a Dream BIG scholarship from University of Phoenix and the NRF Foundation, she plans to equip herself with the skills needed to work with Sur La Table’s consumer development team on child-centric tools and family-oriented digital initiatives. “I see myself further developing the children’s cooking class curriculum offered in Sur La Table stores into an easily accessible online format available to students, schools and the worldwide community.”

Equipped with what her manager calls “an unmatchable can-do attitude,” Kristi also draws upon her experience as an international theatrical performer (she has visited seven countries across three continents and once performed for the Pope) to create meaningful interactions with her customers. She understands “the monumental importance of food in regards to memory and story” and credits her travels with giving her a way to “connect with different peoples who have a diverse array of palates.”

Kristi looks forward to building upon her successes at Sur La Table, using her forthcoming University of Phoenix MBA to polish her analytical and creative talents and jumpstart the second phase of her career. And she promises to connect more people — and their kids — to what’s “on the table” in their own homes.

The National Retail Federation collaborates with University of Phoenix to offer the Dream BIG Scholarship to people who work in retail. This year, 20 recipients received full-tuition scholarships to help them pursue their big dreams. Meet the Class of 2014 and learn more about the Dream BIG Scholarship.
