On the final day of Retail’s BIG Show 2016, retail industry professionals gathered to hear Marian Salzman, CEO of Havas PR North America, make sense of the complex and dynamic world in which they’re now operating. Salzman identified several broad trends being seen throughout the world and how those trends will affect the retail industry in 2016 and beyond.

Topping her list were two trends: the sense of unease that has creeped into all of our lives and our growing tech addiction. Whether it’s worrying about our children’s safety, identity theft, terrorism or even how our reliance on technology is affecting our lives, there’s a growing uneasiness pervading our lives — a sense of not knowing what to expect. Salzman said that retailers can respond to this trend by thinking of ways to make customers feel more comfortable, whether it’s being upfront with sourcing information or using simpler ingredients. When it comes to tech addiction, physical retailers must learn how to successfully interrupt and complement consumers’ parallel digital lives.
