Going green by embracing technology

When Chrissy Raymond was promoted in 2010 to her current position as vendor services assistant for Boscov’s distribution center in Reading, Pa., she was a little stunned. Not by the magnitude of her new job responsibilities — she had already worked for the retailer for nearly a decade, after all — but by the sheer number of cabinets holding paper documentation that was printed and copied on a daily basis. She found that important paperwork was frequently stored in filing cabinets, only to be scanned and emailed later to vendors. “I was determined to find a better way,” she said.

Chrissy began painstakingly reformatting and cataloging the company’s vendor files, teaching herself how to build and manage databases along the way. She also began tweaking the company’s Vendor Routing Guide website to better facilitate communication and email distribution. “I love to learn new things … . If I don’t know how to do something, I research it until I find a solution.”

With a degree in information technology from University of Phoenix, Chrissy plans to become even more efficient at finding technological answers to make Boscov’s more efficient and its operations more sustainable. She intends to become fluent in Visual Basic, SQL, HTML5 and JavaScript to widen her technological toolbox — and banish those file cabinets for good.
