NRF has been conducting its annual back-to-school and back-to-college surveys since 2003 to see how American families will shop for clothing, supplies and other items for the next school year.

This year, spending is expected to reach $80.7 billion. Average planned spending per household for back-to-school shoppers — families with children in elementary school through high school — is $696.70. The average back-to-college spending per household is $976.78.

About the survey: The survey of 7,660 consumers was conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics between July 1-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.
