Holiday shopping is in full swing and while most consumers say they will spend about the same as last year, young adults are once again the shoppers most likely to increase their spending.

Organized retail crime is continuing to grow, with nearly three-quarters of retailers surveyed reporting an increase in the past year, according to the 14th annual ORC study released today by the National Retail Federation.

According to the annual survey released by NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics, of those planning to shop during the long holiday weekend 21 percent (34 million) plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day, but Black Friday will remain the busiest day with 71 percent (116 million) planning to shop.

Imports at the nation’s major retail container ports have slowed down from their pre-holiday peak but remain at unusually high levels as retailers continue bringing in merchandise before tariffs increase in January, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report from NRF and Hackett Associates.

Retail industry employment in October remained essentially unchanged from September and U.S. businesses overall added 250,000 jobs, more than double September’s monthly gain.

Consumers will spend in three main categories during the holidays — gifts, at $637.67; non-gift holiday items such as food, decorations, flowers and greeting cards, at $215.04; and other non-gift purchases that take advantage of the deals and promotions throughout the season, at $154.53.
