Five to Thrive: Cybersecurity
Five to Thrive: Cybersecurity
Cyberattacks impact big and small businesses alike. Small retailers are often targeted because attackers assume their defenses are weaker. A single incident can cost businesses revenue, customer trust and even their ability to operate. The good news? With a few simple steps, small retailers can greatly reduce their risk and keep their business (and customers) safe.
1: Strengthen your passwords and logins
Use long, unique passwords for each account, and avoid reusing them across platforms. A password manager can help make this easier. Add multi-factor authentication wherever possible, so even if a password is stolen, hackers still can’t get in.
2: Keep systems and devices updated
Hackers often exploit old software with known vulnerabilities. Regularly update all computers, point-of-sale systems, apps and devices. Think of updates like locking the doors at closing time, a small step that prevents big risks.
3: Train your employees to spot scams
Most cyber incidents start with human error, such as clicking a fake email link. Train your team to recognize phishing, suspicious attachments and unusual login requests. Encourage them to speak up if something feels off. Early detection can prevent bigger problems.
4: Protect your networks and devices
Make sure your Wi-Fi is secure with strong passwords and encryption. Set up a separate network for customers and keep your business systems on a private one. Install antivirus protection, turn on device encryption and regularly back up critical data so you can recover quickly if something goes wrong.
5: Have a response plan ready
If an attack does happen, time is critical. Write down a simple plan: who to call, what to shut down and how to notify staff and customers. Consider cyber insurance to help with costs and always report incidents to law enforcement. Being prepared can turn a crisis into a manageable challenge.
