NRF has been conducting its annual Back-to-School and Back-to-College surveys since 2003 to see how American families will shop for clothing, supplies and other items for the next school year.

2016 update: Families aren’t finished with back-to-school shopping

Although back-to-school shopping started earlier this year, families are slowly tackling their supplies lists. According to NRF’s survey conducted by Prosper Insights, the average family with children in grades K-12 had completed almost half of their shopping as of early August. Only 13 percent of families marked everything off their shopping lists and 22 percent had yet to start shopping.

Back-to-school and college spending ranks as the second biggest shopping season for retailers, after the winter holidays. This year, NRF and Research Now conducted a flash poll to learn more about school supplies lists and how families with school-age children shop online. The survey found that 77 percent of families are required to buy supplies for the classroom and 84 percent won’t purchase online without free shipping.

2016: Back-to-school and college spending to reach $75.8 billion

With back-to-school spending on a “stock up” cycle rather than a “make do” cycle, the average family is expected to spend more freely on school and college supplies this year, according to NRF’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics. Total spending for K-12 and college is expected to reach $75.8 billion, up from last year’s $68 billion.
