NRF has been conducting its annual back-to-school and back-to-college surveys since 2003 to see how American families will shop for clothing, supplies and other items for the next school year.

Families with children attending K-12 plan to spend an average $848.90 per family in 2021. Spending is expected to total $37.1 billion, breaking last year’s record of $33.9 billion.

College students and their families expect to spend an average $1,200.32 per family. College spending is expected to total $71 billion, up from $67.7 billion last year.

About the survey: The survey of 7,704 consumers was conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics between July 1-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.1 percentage points.
