Retailers unite to aid hurricane relief

The Kroger Co., Walmart and Lowe’s are among companies committing millions of dollars in resources

As communities across the southeastern United States continue to grapple with the aftermath of the deadliest hurricane to hit the mainland U.S. since Katrina in 2005, retailers including Lowe’s, Publix and Walmart are committing millions of dollars, along with supplies and reinforcements, to assist in aid efforts.

Almost one week after Helena hit, more than 1.1 million customers were still without power in the Carolinas and Georgia. Lowe’s, headquartered in Mooresville, N.C., is donating $2 million to support relief efforts. The donation will assist Lowe’s nonprofit partners and first responders in their efforts to respond to critical needs like emergency shelter, food and water, while also supporting long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts.

As of Oct. 3, Amazon had delivered more than 12 truckloads of essential items from its Disaster Relief Hub to relief partners working in the affected areas. The company has also established a cash donation page to allow people to directly contribute to humanitarian organizations with a proven track record of quickly providing essential services on the ground.

Publix Super Markets is donating $1 million through its Publix Charities. The grocery chain, headquartered in Lakeland, Fla., is also activating a companywide checkout donation program, with proceeds supporting nonprofit organizations including the American Red Cross and United Way.

Bloomin’ Brands and its restaurants — Bonefish Grill, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar and Outback Steakhouse — is partnering with the American Red Cross to provide hot meals to Florida shelters. The company is also feeding local neighborhoods during their clean-up efforts, and providing meals for first responders in three states, including the National Guard, local police and fire departments, and emergency operations personnel.

Walmart has committed an initial $6 million in support, including donations of food, water, supplies and grants to relief organizations. Its also launched a nationwide campaign at registers in stores and clubs and online, and will match customer donations to the American Red Cross up to $2.5 million through Oct. 13.

The Kroger Co. is distributing truckloads of drinkable water and ice to communities in need and plans to continue. USO ǀ Kroger Mobile Canteens are being deployed to affected areas to support the National Guard, which is helping with disaster relief efforts, and military service members personally impacted by the hurricane.

Target has donated $3 million to aid in response and recovery efforts, which will be distributed to local and national disaster relief organizations, including Convoy of Hope, SBP and local food banks.
