The National Retail Federation today issued the following statement from President and CEO Matthew Shay regarding changes to the planned in-person NRF 2021: Retail’s Big Show – Chapter 2.

Retail sales during 2020’s November-December holiday season grew an unexpectedly high 8.3 percent over the same period in 2019 to $789.4 billion, exceeding NRF's forecast despite the economic challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. The numbers include online sales, which were up 23.9 percent at $209 billion.

The National Retail Federation issued the following statement from President and CEO Matthew Shay in response to the release of President-elect Biden’s plan to combat the coronavirus and stimulate the nation’s economic recovery. 

NRF, AAFA, FDRA, RILA and USFIA are working together to address the situation.

Consumers returned an estimated $428 billion in merchandise to retailers last year, approximately 10.6 percent of total U.S. retail sales in 2020.

Imports seen during 2020 appear to be headed toward a new record despite the coronavirus pandemic, and remain at high levels as 2021 begins, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report from NRF and Hackett Associates.

An estimated 25,000 industry professionals are expected to attend Retail’s Big Show, which is NRF’s 110th annual convention and will be held January 12–14, 19 and 21–22, 2021.

NRF welcomed regulations issued by the Department of Labor that clearly define the difference between workers who must be considered employees and those who can be classified as independent contractors.
