Creative collaborations have become one of retail's most powerful ways to connect with consumers, but the most successful partnerships are about far more than celebrity names or limited-edition products. Gigi Guerra, vice president of marketing and creative curation at Target, shares how thoughtful storytelling, guest insights and authentic partnerships come together to create moments that resonate across generations.

Building a career by following creativity

"I always knew I wanted to go into some kind of creative profession. I love fashion. I love clothing. I loved retail," Guerra says. Her career began in fashion design before taking an unexpected turn into magazine publishing, where she combined her passion for fashion, writing and retail.

From working behind the scenes at fashion publications to helping launch Madewell as one of its earliest employees, every step reinforced the importance of building brands with a clear voice and a strong point of view.

Guerra built her career through creativity, curiosity and a willingness to embrace opportunities that did not exist in her original career plan. Those experiences ultimately led to her work at Target, where she has helped shape some of the retailer's most recognizable collaborations.

Creating partnerships that feel authentic

Every Target partnership starts by understanding what guests are asking for, what’s happening in culture and what both brands can accomplish together that neither could achieve independently. The goal is to democratize great design by making it accessible to everyone without compromising creativity or quality.

"Each collaboration we do is really different and really bespoke to the partner, the moment in time, and really mutually collaborative," Guerra says. "It's that meeting in the middle where everybody wins."

Whether working with fashion designers, entertainment brands or cultural icons, every collaboration is intentionally built around exclusivity and a genuine connection to the audience. Partnerships with brands like Pokémon and Roller Rabbit were developed through years of planning and close collaboration with each partner. The most memorable launches succeed because they make customers feel understood.

Why community drives successful collaborations

One of the biggest lessons from years of collaboration work is that products alone do not create excitement. Communities do. Social media has transformed collaboration strategy by giving brands real-time insight into what consumers care about. That philosophy extends inside Target as well. For the Pokémon collaboration, employees who were longtime fans helped shape ideas and provide feedback throughout the creative process. The result was a collection designed by fans, for fans, creating an experience that extended far beyond the products themselves.
